James Andrew Rushing was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA. He was an American blues shouter, balladeer, swing jazz singer and pianist. He studied at Wilberforce University. He was known as "Mr. Five by Five". His music groups including Oklahoma City Blue Devils (1927-1929), The Count Basie Orchestra (Vocalist, 1935-1948), and The Dave Brubeck Quartet.
