About
Eliza Cook was born in London Road, Southwark, England. She was an English poet. She was a proponent of political freedom for women, and believed in the ideology of self-improvement through education, something she called "levelling up." Her first volume, Lays of a Wild Harp, appeared in 1835, when she was only seventeen. Her poem The Old Armchair made hers a household name for a generation, both in England and the United States. In that year, she published Melaia and other Poems.
