Jacob August Riis was born in Ribe, Denmark. He was a Danish-born American social reformer, "muckraking" journalist and social documentary photographer. He is known for using his photographic and journalistic talents to help the impoverished in New York City; those impoverished New Yorkers were the subject of most of his prolific writings and photography. He wrote several books include: How the Other Half Lives, The Children of the Poor, Out of Mulberry Street, The Making of an American(memoir), The Battle With the Slum, and Children of the Tenements.
