John Charles Fremont was born in Savannah, Georgia, USA. He was an American explorer, Republican politician and soldier. He studied at the College of Charleston, South Carolina. He married Jessie Benton Frémont in 1841. In 1856, he became the first candidate of the anti-slavery Republican Party for the office of President of the United States. During the Mexican–American War, Frémont, a major in the U.S. Army, took control of California from the California Republic in 1846. He served as the United States Senator from California (1850-1851). He lost the 1856 presidential election to Democrat James Buchanan. During the American Civil War, he was given command of Department of the West by President Abraham Lincoln. He served as Governor of Arizona from 1878 to 1881.
