John Calvin was born in Noyon, Picardy, France. He was a French theologian, lawyer and author. He was the leading French Protestant Reformer and the most important figure in the second generation of the Protestant Reformation. His interpretation of Christianity, advanced above all in his Institutio Christianae religionis, and the institutional and social patterns he worked out for Geneva deeply influenced Protestantism elsewhere in Europe and in North America. He studied at the University of Paris in 1523 to be educated for the priesthood but later decided that he should be a lawyer; from 1528 to 1531, therefore, he studied in the law schools of Orléans and Bourges. He wrote several books include: Institutes of the Christian Religion, A Guide to Christian Living, and Sermons on Election & Reprobation.
