Jerome John Garcia was born in San Francisco, California, USA. He was an American guitarist and songwriter, best known for his work as the lead guitarist with the band the Grateful Dead, which came to prominence during the counterculture era in the 1960s. With albums like American Beauty, the band toured for decades with a highly devoted “Deadhead” following. He studied at San Francisco Art Institute. He also founded and participated in a variety of side projects, including the Saunders-Garcia Band, the Jerry Garcia Band, Old and in the Way, Legion of Mary, and the New Riders of the Purple Sage.
