Sir Harold Matthew Evans was born in Newton Heath, Manchester, England. He is a British-American journalist and writer who was editor of The Sunday Times from 1967 to 1981. He graduated with honours in politics and economics and subsequently earned a Master of Arts degree for a thesis on foreign policy. In 1984 he moved to the United States, where he had leading positions in journalism with US News and World Report, The Atlantic Monthly, and the New York Daily News. Since 2001, he has served as editor-at-large of The Week magazine and since 2005, he has been a contributor to The Guardian and BBC Radio 4. In 2011, he was appointed editor-at-large of the Reuters news agency. He has written several books include: Pictures on a page, Good Times, Bad Times, Editing and design, The American century, and War Stories.
