John Calvin Portman Jr. was born in Walhalla, South Carolina, USA. He was an American neofuturistic architect widely known for popularizing hotels and office buildings with multi-storied interior atria. He graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1950. He was a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. The Peachtree Center area includes Portman-designed Hyatt, Westin, and Marriott hotels. His selected edifices, including SunTrust Plaza- Atlanta, Tomorrow Square- Shanghai, 102 Incheon Tower- Incheon, Mandarin Oriental- Singapore, Four Embarcadero Center- San Francisco, Marquis Theatre- Manhattan, Bund Center- Shanghai, Menara Multi Purpose- Kuala Lumpur, and One Nashville Place- Nashville.
