Franz Joseph I was born in Schönbrunn Palace, Vienna, Austria. He was Emperor of Austria, King of Hungary, Croatia and Bohemia. He divided his empire into the Dual Monarchy, in which Austria and Hungary coexisted as equal partners. He played a large role during the revolutions of 1848. He led campaigns against rebellions and helped maintain order in the Austrian Empire. He was also able to re-establish the old absolute monarchy even after the revolutions had changed it. In 1879 he formed an alliance with Prussian-led Germany, and in 1914 his ultimatum to Serbia led Austria and Germany into World War I.
