John Macquarrie was born in Renfrew, Scotland. He was a Scottish theologian, philosopher and Anglican priest. He earned an MA degree in philosophy in 1940, and a Bachelor of Divinity degree in theology in 1943 both from the University of Glasgow, Scotland. He was ordained as a Presbyterian minister in the Church of Scotland in 1945. After demobilization he served as a parish minister in the Church of Scotland at St Ninian's Church, Brechin. He returned to the University of Glasgow to complete his PhD in 1954. In 1962, he was appointed professor of systematic theology at Union Theological Seminary in New York City. He served as Lady Margaret Professor of Divinity at the University of Oxford and a canon residentiary of Christ Church, Oxford. He wrote several books include: An Existentialist Theology, Principles of Christian theology, Paths in spirituality, and Jesus Christ in modern thought.
