Muste was born in Zierikzee, the Netherlands, and became a naturalized United States citizen in 1896. He attended Hope College, where he was class valedictorian, captain of the basketball team, and a member of the college's Fraternal Society. He earned a Bachelor's degreeĀ in 1905 and a Master's degreeĀ in 1909 from the Theological Seminary of the Dutch Reformed Church. He earned a bachelor of divinity from Union Theological Seminary in 1913. He also attended New York University, and Columbia University.
