Sir Hugh Maxwell Casson was born in London, England. He was a British architect, artist and interior designer. He studied at Eastbourne College in East Sussex, St John's College in Cambridge, and Bartlett School of Architecture in London. He was appointed to his role as director of architecture of the Festival of Britain in 1948 at the age of 38. The festival was a great success, and he was knighted for his efforts. He served as professor of Interior Design at Royal College of Art from 1955-1975. He designed the interior of the royal yacht Britannia and is also credited with having taught Charles, Prince of Wales to paint in watercolours. He was the President of the Royal Academy from 1976 to 1984. In 1978, he was elected to the National Academy of Design as an Honorary Corresponding member. His selected edifices include: Ismaili Centre, London and WH Smith's HQ. He was also an accomplished watercolorist, and his books Hugh Casson’s Cambridge, Hugh Casson’s Oxford, and Hugh Casson’s London are a testament to this talent. He was happily married for sixty years to the architect, designer and photographer, Margaret Macdonald.
