James Vincent Cunningham was born in Cumberland, Maryland, USA. He was an American poet, literary critic and teacher. He studied at Stanford University. He earned an A.B. in classics in 1934 and a Ph.D. in English in 1945—both from Stanford. During World War II, he taught mathematics to Air Force pilots. He taught at several universities before settling at Brandeis University in 1953. He wrote several poems include: For My Contemporaries, The Helmsman, The Judge Is Fury, Doctor Drink, The exclusions of a rhyme(Nominations- National Book Award for Poetry), Some Salt, and Let Thy Words Be Few.
