Joanna Southcott was born in Devonshire, England. She was an English self-described religious prophet and writer. She was the daughter of a farmer and lived close to Exeter, England. She grew up in a devout religious atmosphere, being obliged to read a chapter of the Bible daily and discuss it with her father. She became a sturdy, vivacious, self-reliant young woman. She wrote several books include: The Strange Effects of Faith, A Dispute Between The Woman And The Powers Of Darkness 1802, and The True Explanation of the Bible (with J. Rev Pomeroy).
