Maria Sharapova was born on 19 April 1987 in Nyagan, Khanty–Mansi Autonomous Okrug, Russia, then within the Soviet Union. Her parents, Yuri and Elena, are from Gomel, Belarus, also then within the Soviet Union. Concerned about the regional effects of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear accident, they left their homeland shortly before Sharapova was born, moving within the Soviet Union from Gomel to Nyagan.
