James Adelbert McDermott was born in Chicago, Illinois, USA. He is an American Democratic politician and physician. He was the U.S. Representative from Washington's 7th congressional district from 1989 to 2017. He was elected to the Washington state legislature as a representative from the 43rd District from 1971-1973. He was a member of the Washington State Senate from 1975-1987. He graduated from Wheaton College, Wheaton, Illinois in 1958. He earned an MD degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago in 1963. He served in the United States Navy Medical Corps as a psychiatrist in California during the Vietnam War.
