James Alfred Van Allen was born in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, USA. He was an American Astrophysicist at the University of Iowa. He was instrumental in establishing the field of magnetospheric research in space. He earned a BS degree from Iowa Wesleyan College in 1935. He earned an MS degree in Physics from the University of Iowa in 1936. He received his PhD in Nuclear Physics from the University of Iowa in 1939. He served as a professor at the University of Iowa from 1951-85. He received many awards include: Time magazine Man of the Year in 1960, Elliott Cresson Medal in 1961, Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1978, National Medal of Science in 1987, Crafoord Prize in 1989, and Vannevar Bush Award in 1991.
