James Watson Cronin was born in Chicago, Illinois, USA. He was an American particle physicist. He and co-researcher Val Logsdon Fitch were awarded the 1980 Nobel Prize in Physics for a 1964 experiment that proved that certain subatomic reactions do not adhere to fundamental symmetry principles. He earned a BS degree in Physics and Mathematics from Southern Methodist University in 1951. He earned an MS degree in Physics from the University of Chicago in 1953. He received his PhD in Physics from the University of Chicago in 1955. He served as a Professor of Physics at Princeton University, the University of Chicago, and the University of Utah.
