I got overwhelmed by the magnitude of the celebrity culture in America. My background is as a news journalist, and newsrooms in the US are shrinking – investigation teams are being terminated or shrunk on newspapers all around the country. The one aspect that’s expanded is coverage of celebrity culture.
All novels are about crime. You’d be hard pressed to find any novel that does not have an element of crime. I don’t see myself as a crime novelist, but there are crimes in my books. That’s the nature of storytelling, if you want to reflect the real world.

Carl Hiaasen was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He is an American journalist, columnist, and novelist. He graduated in 1974 with a degree in journalism. He was a reporter for Cocoa Today for two years, beginning in 1974. After becoming an investigative reporter, Hiaasen began to write novels. His first three were co-written by fellow journalist Montalbano: Powder Burn, Trap Line, and A Death in China. His subsequent children's novel were Flush; Scat; and, most recently, Chomp.
