It is the man of science, eager to have his every opinion regenerated, his every idea rationalized, by drinking at the fountain of fact, and devoting all the energies of his life to the cult of truth, not as he understands it, but as he does not yet understand it, that ought properly to be called a philosopher.

Charles Sanders Peirce was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He was an American philosopher, logician, mathematician, and scientist. He was educated as a chemist and employed as a scientist for 30 years. An innovator in mathematics, statistics, philosophy, research methodology, and various sciences, Peirce considered himself, first and foremost, a logician. Webster's Biographical Dictionary said in 1943 that Peirce was "now regarded as the most original thinker and greatest logician of his time." On April 20, 1877 he was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences.
