John Lester Hubbard Chafee was born in Providence, Rhode Island, USA. He was an American Republican politician. He served as the 66th Governor of Rhode Island from 1963-1969. He served as the United States Senator from Rhode Island (1976-1999). He served as the United States Secretary of the Navy and Chair of the Senate Environment Committee. He was a member of the Rhode Island State House of Representatives from 1957-1963. He also served as an officer in the United States Marine Corps. He earned a BA degree from Yale University in 1947. He earned his LLB degree from Harvard Law School in 1950. He received several Awards and honors, including Presidential Medal of Freedom, Navy Presidential Unit Citation, Asiatic–Pacific Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, and Korea Defense Service Medal.
