James Houston Davis was born in Beech Springs, Jackson Parish, Louisiana, USA. He was an American singer and songwriter of both sacred and popular songs. He served for two nonconsecutive terms from 1944–48 and from 1960–64 as the governor of Louisiana. He earned his bachelor's degree in history from Louisiana College in Pineville, Louisiana. He earned his master's degree from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. During the late 1920s, he taught history for a year at the former Dodd College for Girls in Shreveport, Louisiana. He wrote several songs include: "You Are My Sunshine" (with Charles Mitchell), and "There's a New Moon Over My Shoulder". He was a nationally popular country music and gospel singer from the 1930s into the 1960s, occasionally recording and performing as late as the early 1990s. He was inducted into six halls of fame, including the Country Music Hall of Fame, Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame.
