George Tawlon Manneh Oppong Ousman Weah was born in Monrovia, Liberia. He is a Liberian politician and retired footballer who played as a striker. In 1995 he was named FIFA World Player of the Year and won the Ballon d'Or, becoming the first African player to win these awards. In 1996, he was named African Player of the Century. An idol in Africa, he has been heavily involved in politics in his homeland Liberia. He ran unsuccessfully for president in the 2005 election, losing to Ellen Johnson Sirleaf in the second round of voting. In the 2011 election, he ran for vice president on Winston Tubman's ticket. Running as a Congress for Democratic Change candidate, he was elected to the Senate in 2014.
