James Weldon Johnson was born in Jacksonville, Florida, USA. He was an American author, professor, diplomat, lawyer, poet, songwriter and civil rights activist. He earned a BA degree from Atlanta University in 1894. He received an Honorary master's degree from Atlanta University in 1904. He is best remembered for his leadership of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, where he started working in 1917. He was appointed under President Theodore Roosevelt as US consul in Venezuela and Nicaragua for most of the period from 1906 to 1913. In 1934 he was the first African-American professor to be hired at New York University. Later in life he was a professor of creative literature and writing at Fisk University. He wrote several books include: The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man(novel), Fifty Years and Other Poems( poetry), The Book of American Negro Poetry, God's Trombones(poetry), Along This Way(memoir), Negro Americans, What Now?(essay), and Saint Peter Relates an Incident(poetry).
