James Hansen Newman Quotes

James Hansen Newman was born in Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. He is an American physicist and a former NASA astronaut who flew on four Space Shuttle missions. He is married to Mary Lee Pieper and has three children. He earned a BA degree in Physics from Dartmouth College in 1978, an MA degree in 1982 and his PhD in Physics from Rice University in 1984. In 1985, he was appointed as adjunct professor in the Department of Space Physics and Astronomy at Rice University. That same year he came to work at NASA’s Johnson Space Center. He received NASA Superior Achievement Award in 1988. In 1996 he received the NASA Exceptional Service Medal. He is the recipient of the American Astronautical Society Flight Achievement Award for his work as a member of the STS-51 and STS-88 crews. He flew as a mission specialist on STS-51 in 1993, STS-69 in 1995, STS-88 in 1998 and STS-109 in 2002. A veteran of four space flights, he has logged over 43 days in space, including six spacewalks totaling 43 hours and 13 minutes. He is a member of the American Physical Society and Sigma Xi.
