John Jewel was born in Buden, Devon, England. He was an English priest. He was Bishop of Salisbury from 1559 to 1571 and controversialist who defended Queen Elizabeth I’s religious policies opposing Roman Catholicism. The works Jewel produced during the 1560s defined and clarified points of difference between the churches of England and Rome, thus strengthening the ability of Anglicanism to survive as a permanent institution. He earned a BA degree in 1540, and an MA degree in 1545 both from Merton College, Oxford University. He wrote several books include: Apologia ecclesiae anglicanae, and The Apology of the Church of England.
