John Gay was born in Barnstaple, Devon, England. He was an English poet and dramatist, chiefly remembered as the author of The Beggar’s Opera, a work distinguished by good-humoured satire and technical assurance. He was educated at the town's grammar school. He wrote several poems, including Trivia, and Poetry and prose of John Gay.
