John Raleigh Mott was born in Livingston Manor, Sullivan County, New York, USA. He was an American peace activist. He was a long-serving leader of the Young Men's Christian Association and the World Student Christian Federation. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1946 for his work in establishing and strengthening international Protestant Christian student organizations that worked to promote peace. He shared the prize with Emily Balch. He studied history at Upper Iowa University. He earned a bachelor's degree from Cornell University in 1888. He was influenced by Arthur Tappan Pierson one of the forces behind the Student Volunteer Movement for Foreign Missions, which was founded in 1886. He wrote several books include: The Evangelization of the World in this Generation, The Students of North American United, The Chinese Student Migration to Tokyo, The Future Leadership of the Church, The Decisive Hour of Christian Missions, Men and Religion, The Present World Situation, Cooperation and the World Mission, and Five Decades and a Forward View.
