John McKinley was born in Culpeper County, Virginia, USA. He was an American judge and politician. He served as the US Senator from Alabama and an associate justice of the United States Supreme Court (appointed by President Martin Van Buren) from 1838-1852. He was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Alabama's 2nd Congressional district from 1833-1835. He also served as Alabama State House of Representatives. During World War II the Liberty ship SS John McKinley was built in Brunswick, Georgia, and named in his honor.
