Dr. John Cunningham Lilly was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA. He was an American physician, neuroscientist and writer. He earned a BS degree from California Institute of Technology in 1938. He earned his MD degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1942. He invented and promoted the use of an isolation tank as a means of sensory deprivation. He also attempted communication between humans and dolphins.
