John Edensor Littlewood was born in Rochester, Kent, England. He was an English mathematician, best known for his achievements in analysis, number theory, and differential equations and for his long collaboration with G. H. Hardy. He studied at Trinity College, Cambridge. He was elected a Fellow of Trinity College in 1908. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1916. He was appointed Rouse Ball Professor of Mathematics in 1928, retiring in 1950. He was president of the London Mathematical Society from 1941 to 1943. He wrote several books include: Inequalities (with G. H. Hardy and George PĆ³lya), Lectures on the Theory of Functions, A mathematicians's miscellany, and A Bibliography of John Edensor Littlewood. He received many awards, including Royal Medal, Sylvester Medal, Copley Medal, De Morgan Medal, and Senior Berwick Prize.
