John Bowden Connally Jr. was born in Floresville, Texas, USA. He was an American politician, lawyer and naval officer. He served as the 39th Governor of Texas from 1963-1969 and as the 61st United States Secretary of the Treasury from 1971-1972. He served as the United States Secretary of the Navy from January 25, 1961- December 20, 1961. He earned a BA degree from the University of Texas at Austin. He earned an LLB degree from the University of Texas School of Law in 1941. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a fighter-plane director aboard the aircraft carrier USS Essex and was awarded the Bronze Star for bravery. He was shifted to another Essex-class aircraft carrier, the USS Bennington and was awarded the Legion of Merit. He was discharged in 1946 at the rank of lieutenant commander.
