He was the U.S. House of Representative from Alabama's 1st congressional district from 2003 to 2013. He served as Chairman of the House Ethics Committee from 2011-2013. He resigned from Congress on August 2, 2013, to take a job with the University of Alabama. He earned a BA degree in journalism from the University of Alabama in 1982. He also studied at the University of Alabama School of Law. He married to Janée Lambert in 1990. They have one son and one daughter.
