Jill Ciment was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. She is a Canadian-born American novelist, short story writer and professor. She received her MFA degree in Creative Writing from the University of California, Irvine in 1981. She is a professor of English at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. She has written several novels include: The Law of Falling Bodies, Teeth of the Dog, The Tattoo Artist (Won- Janet Heidinger Kafka Prize), Heroic Measures, and Act of God. She has written other books include: Small Claims (short stories collection) and Half a Life (memoir). She has been the recipient of numerous grants and awards, among them a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship and two New York Foundation for the Arts fellowships. She married to artist Arnold Mesches until his death in 2016.
