Jessica Lucy 'Decca' Freeman-Mitford was born in Gloucestershire, England. She was an English-born American author, journalist and activist noted for her witty and irreverent investigations of various aspects of American society. She moved to the United States in 1939, became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1944, and began to write in the late 1950s. In 1961, she traveled to Montgomery, Alabama, while working on an article about Southern attitudes for Esquire. She wrote several books include: Daughters and Rebels (autobiography), Hons and Rebels (autobiography), The American Way of Death (investigative journalism), The trial of Dr. Spock, Kind and usual punishment (Nominations: National Book Award for Contemporary Affairs), A fine old conflict, Poison penmanship, and The American Way of Birth.
