Jean Richepin was born in Médéa, French Algeria. He was a French poet, novelist and dramatist who examined the lower levels of society in sharp, bold language. His first book of poetry, La Chanson des gueux was published in 1876. His works of poetry include Les Caresses, Les Blasphèmes, and La Mer. He wrote three novels and a number of successful plays.
