Jean Guttery Fritz was born in Hankou, China. She was a Chinese-born American children's writer best known for American biography and history. She won the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award for her career contribution to American children's literature in 1986. She graduated from Wheaton College, Massachusetts in 1937. She married Michael Fritz in 1941. They had two children, David and Andrea. She wrote several books include: Bunny Hopwell's First Spring, The Cabin Faced West(novel), Homesick, My Own Story (autobiography, Won- National Book Award for Young People's Literature in the Children's Fiction category), China Homecoming (autobiography), Surprising Myself (autobiography), Early thunder, George Washington's Breakfast, Brendan the Navigator, The great little Madison(biography), Leonardo's Horse, and The Lost Colony of Roanoke.
