Hugh Williamson was born in West Nottingham Township, Pennsylvania, USA. He was an American physician and politician. He is best known as a signatory to the U.S. Constitution, and for representing North Carolina at the Constitutional Convention. He served as U.S. House of Representatives from North Carolina from 1790-1793. He completed a bachelor's degree at the University of Pennsylvania in 1757, later taking a Master's degree in course. He was appointed Professor of Mathematics in the College from 1761-1763. He completed his medical education at Utrecht University, Netherlands, passing an examination and submitting a thesis in Latin in order to receive a Doctor of Medicine in 1772. He also served as one of the original trustees of the University of North Carolina.
