About
Hugh Lawson White was born in Province of North Carolina, British America. He was an American politician and judge. He studied law in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and was admitted to the bar in 1796. He succeeded Andrew Jackson and served in the United States Senate, representing Tennessee, from 1825 until his resignation in 1840. He was a Whig candidate for President in 1836. He also served as a state supreme court justice. He was Member of the Tennessee state legislature from 1807-1809, and Tennessee state Senate from 1815-1817. White County, Arkansas is named for him.
