Sir Henry Morton Stanley was born in Denbigh, Denbighshire, Wales. He was a Welsh journalist and explorer who was famous for his exploration of central Africa and his search for missionary and explorer David Livingstone. He is also known for his search for the source of the Nile, his work in and development of the Congo Basin region in association with King Leopold II of the Belgians, and commanding the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition. Following the Civil War, he became a journalist in the days of frontier expansion in the American West. In 1867 Stanley offered his services to James Gordon Bennett Jr. of the New York Herald as a special correspondent with the British expeditionary force sent against Tewodros II of Ethiopia, and Stanley was the first to report the fall of Magdala in 1868. He entered Parliament as a Liberal Unionist member for Lambeth North, serving from 1895 to 1900. He was knighted in 1899.
