Gilbert Ryle was born in Brighton, East Sussex, England. He was a British philosopher. He was a representative of the generation of British ordinary language philosophers who shared Wittgenstein's approach to philosophical problems. His best known book is The Concept of Mind, in which he writes that the "general trend of this book will undoubtedly, and harmlessly, be stigmatised as 'behaviourist'." He graduated with first-class honours in classical honour moderations, literae humaniores, politics, philosophy, and economics. He was appointed as lecturer in philosophy at Christ Church, Oxford in 1925. He wrote other books include: Dilemmas, Plato's Progress, On thinking, Critical Essays, and Contemporary aspects of philosophy.
