Sir George Edward Raven Deacon was born in Leicester, UK. He was a British oceanographer and chemist. He was awarded a first-class honours degree in chemistry from King's College London in 1926 and a diploma of education in 1927. He joined the Discovery Investigations to the Antarctic. By systematizing the physical oceanography of the Southern Ocean, he demonstrated that it was part of a global system of ocean circulation. For his work, he was awarded a Doctor of Science by the University of London in 1937. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1944. In 1949, he was appointed as the first Director of the new UK National Institute of Oceanography. He received honorary doctorates from the Universities of Liverpool and Leicester. He was awarded the Polar Medal and the Alexander Agassiz Gold Medal of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA.
