George Bentham was born in Stoke, Plymouth, England. He was an English botanist. Bentham's first major botanical work, Labiatarum Genera et Species, appeared between 1832 and 1836. In this work, he catalogued and described more than 7000 species, including 89 taxa of Eucalyptus. He was secretary of the Horticultural Society of London from 1829 to 1840. He wrote several books include: Flora Australiensis and Handbook of the British Flora. He was awarded the Royal Medal of the Royal Society in 1859. His foreign awards included the Clarke Medal of the Royal Society of New South Wales in 1879.
