Fritz Scholder was born in Breckenridge, Minnesota, United States. He was an American painter. A teacher at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe in the late 1960s, he influenced a generation of Native American students. He was voted Best Boy Artist and President of the Art Camp. After graduating with an MFA Degree in 1964, he accepted the position of instructor in Advanced Painting and Contemporary Art History at the newly formed Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Although best known for his paintings, he produced work in a variety of media -- lithographs, photographs, sculpture, and books. His work is in dozens of museum collections, including those of the Museum of Modern Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, the Hirschhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
