Emeric Pressburger was born in Miskolc, Hungary. He was a Hungarian screenwriter, film director, and producer. He is best known for his series of film collaborations with a British film director Michael Powell, in an award-winning collaboration partnership known as The Archers and produced a series of films, notably 49th Parallel, The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, A Matter of Life and Death, Black Narcissus, The Red Shoes, and The Tales of Hoffmann. He worked as a journalist, translator and short story writer in Weimar Republic Berlin, before turning screenwriter for directors Robert Siodmak and Max Ophuls. In 1942, Pressburger won an Oscar for Best Writing, Original Story, for the film Forty-Ninth Parallel. He studied mathematics and engineering at the Universities of Prague and Stuttgart.
