Ed Wynn was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was an American comedian and actor noted for his Perfect Fool comedy character, his pioneering radio show of the 1930s, and his later career as a dramatic actor. In the 1949-50 season, he hosted one of the first comedy-variety television shows, on CBS, and won both a Peabody Award and an Emmy Award in 1949. His performance as Paul Beaseley in the 1958 film The Great Man earned him nominations for a Golden Globe Award for "Best Supporting Actor" and a BAFTA Award for "Best Foreign Actor".
