There is no manner of doubt that a town surrounded by water is a very fine sight; but a town surrounded by land is much finer. Can there be any comparison in point of beauty, between the dull monotony of a watery surface, and the delightful variety of gardens, meadows, hills and woods?

Dr. John Moore was born in Stirling, Scotland. He was a Scottish physician and writer. After taking his medical degree at Glasgow, he served with the army in Flanders during the Seven Years' War, then proceeded to London to continue his studies, and eventually to Paris, where he was attached to the household of the British ambassador. His novel Zeluco, a close analysis of the motives of a selfish profligate, produced a great impression at the time, and indirectly, through the poetry of Byron, has left an abiding mark on literature. His book, Medical Sketches, was first written as medical advice to a relative serving British troops in Virginia and was later expanded into a textbook in 1786.
