Douglas Wilder was born in Richmond, Virginia. He is an American lawyer and politician, who served as the first African American to be elected as governor of Virginia. He served as the 66th Governor of Virginia from 1990 to 1994. His most recent political office was Mayor of Richmond, Virginia, which he held from 2005 to 2009. He began his career in public office by winning a 1969 special election for the Virginia State Senate from a Richmond-area district. He received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Virginia Union University in 1951 and a law degree from Howard University in 1959. He established a law practice in Richmond.
