The holocaust was certainly a human tragedy. But it was not only a human tragedy. It was also a Christian tragedy, a tragedy for Western civilization, and a tragedy for all humankind. The killing was done by people to other people, while still other people stood by. The perpetrators, where they were not actually Christians arose from a Christian culture. The bystanders most capable of helping were Christians.

David S. Wyman was born in Weymouth, Massachusetts. He is the author of several books on the responses of the United States to Nazi Germany's persecution of and programs to exterminate Jews. He earned an A.B. in history from Boston University and a Ph.D. in history from Harvard University. He taught in the History Department at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He is the author of The Abandonment of the Jews: America and the Holocaust, 1941–1945 and Paper Walls: America and the Refugee Crisis, 1938–1941.
