Charles "Pete" Conrad, Jr. was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was an American astronaut and aviator during the Apollo 12 mission became the third man to walk on the Moon. He set an eight-day space endurance record along with his Command Pilot Gordon Cooper on the Gemini 5 mission, and commanded the Gemini 11 mission. For this, President Jimmy Carter awarded him the Congressional Space Medal of Honor in 1978. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Princeton in 1953, and received automatic commission as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy as a Naval ROTC graduate. He became a Naval Aviator and a fighter pilot. He has logged more than 6,500 hours flying time, with more than 5,000 hours in jet aircraft.
